About
Thomas Dale DeLay (born April 8, 1947, in Laredo, Texas) is an American Republican politician, author, blogger, and entrepreneur. Known by nicknames such as 'The Hammer' for his aggressive political style and 'Hot Tub Tom' from his earlier playboy reputation, DeLay began his political career in 1978 when he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives, becoming the first Republican from Fort Bend County to serve in the state legislature. During this period, he admitted to heavy drinking, consuming eight to twelve martinis nightly at receptions and fundraisers. He transitioned to national politics in 1984, winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives for Texas's 22nd congressional district, where he served until 2006. DeLay rose quickly through the ranks, appointed as deputy minority whip in 1988, and later becoming House Majority Leader from 2003 to 2005, wielding significant influence in the Republican-led Congress. His tenure was marked by his hardline conservative stance and strategic maneuvering, earning him a fearsome reputation. However, his career ended abruptly in 2006 amid corruption charges related to campaign finance violations, leading to his resignation from Congress. Although charges were later dismissed or overturned, the scandals tarnished his legacy and forced his retirement from elective office. Post-politics, DeLay has engaged in writing, blogging, and entrepreneurial ventures, including appearances in media and advocacy for conservative causes. His influence networks extended through close ties to lobbying firms and business interests, particularly in energy and pest control sectors from his pre-political career as an exterminator.
