About
Thomas Ludwig John D'Alesandro III (born July 24, 1929, in Baltimore, Maryland; died October 20, 2019), commonly known as Tommy D'Alesandro, was an American attorney and politician from the prominent Italian-American D'Alesandro political family. He was the eldest son of Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., the 41st Mayor of Baltimore, and the brother of Nancy Pelosi, who later became the first female Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. D'Alesandro attended Loyola College in Baltimore and earned a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law. Before entering politics, he worked in insurance and as a broker, careers he briefly returned to after his public service. As a Democrat, he began his political career in local government, serving as president of the Baltimore City Council from 1962 to 1967. His most notable role was as the 44th Mayor of Baltimore, serving from 1967 to 1971. His tenure was marked by significant challenges, including the Baltimore riot of 1968 following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., which highlighted deep racial and economic tensions in the city. After leaving office, he largely retired from public life, focusing on his legal practice until his death at age 90.
