About
The Tea Party movement is an American fiscally conservative political movement within the Republican Party that began in 2007, with early precursors including a 2002 website (www.usteaparty.com) by Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE), which lobbied for corporate-friendly policies including tobacco. It was catapulted into the mainstream by Congressman Ron Paul's presidential campaign and expanded in response to policies of Democratic president Barack Obama. A key catalyst was Rick Santelli's CNBC rant on February 19, 2009. The movement became a major factor in the 2010 midterm elections, where Republicans gained 63 House seats and control of the House. It is a diffuse collection of groups and individuals with no central organizing structure, drawing strength from its decentralized nature and online networking via platforms like Facebook, email, and conference calls. Prominent media figures associated with the movement from 2009-2012 include Glenn Beck, who amplified and helped shape the Tea Party movement through his radio and TV platforms.
