About
Tammy Suzanne Green Baldwin is an American politician and lawyer who has served as the junior United States Senator from Wisconsin since 2013. A prominent member of the Democratic Party, she is known for her progressive political ideology and her advocacy on issues such as healthcare, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental protection. Baldwin made history as the first openly gay person elected to the U.S. Senate and the first woman to represent Wisconsin in the Senate. She previously served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999 to 2013, and prior to that, in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1993 to 1999. Throughout her career, Senator Baldwin has been a vocal proponent of policies aimed at expanding access to affordable healthcare, including efforts to lower prescription drug costs and protect the Affordable Care Act. She has also been a consistent supporter of LGBTQ+ equality, championing legislation to protect against discrimination. In foreign policy, Baldwin has supported AIPAC-backed legislation, including military aid to Israel, a stance that aligns with mainstream Democratic foreign policy but has drawn criticism from some progressive and anti-war groups. She currently serves as the Secretary of the Senate Democratic Caucus and became the dean of the Wisconsin congressional delegation in 2023. Baldwin was raised by her grandparents in Madison, Wisconsin, after her mother struggled with mental illness and substance abuse.
