About
Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, born on June 3, 1980, in Doha, Qatar, is a member of the ruling Al Thani family and has served as the Emir of Qatar since June 25, 2013, making him the head of state. He is the fourth son of former Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and his second wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, a prominent figure in education and culture. Educated at Sherborne School in England and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he was groomed for leadership from an early age. His early career included military service, rising to command the Qatari National Guard by 2009, and involvement in sports diplomacy through the Qatar Olympic Committee. He became heir apparent in August 2003 after his older brother renounced his claim, and ascended to the emirate following his father's abdication, becoming the youngest monarch in the Gulf region at the time. Under his leadership, Qatar has continued to assert global influence through its natural gas wealth, funding ambitious foreign policy initiatives, mediation in international conflicts, and significant infrastructure projects like preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The country also significantly funds institutions such as the Brookings Doha Center and the Middle East Institute (MEI). His reign has faced challenges including the 2017–2021 Qatar diplomatic crisis (Gulf blockade led by Saudi Arabia and other nations), which he navigated by strengthening ties with Turkey, Iran, and the United States, leading to the blockade's end via the Al-Ula Declaration in January 2021. Domestically, he has focused on economic diversification, women's empowerment, and education reforms while maintaining Qatar's absolute monarchy system. He is married to three wives and has several children.
