About
Susan Charm Schwartz is a dentist and the wife of Kurt N. Schwartz, former Director of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), who retired in 2019 after 37 years of public service. The family resides in Concord, Massachusetts. In July 2010, she donated $250 to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Deval Patrick. Since November 2023, Susan Schwartz and her family have maintained a memorial display of approximately 1,500 Israeli flags on property they own off Sudbury Road in Concord Center, across from the Concord Free Public Library, to honor the more than 1,200 Israelis killed in the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks and to demonstrate solidarity with Israel. The family also displays flags and a Star of David banner at their home. The display has faced vandalism, including flag trampling and graffiti such as 'We don’t want no Zionists here' and 'Genocide supporters live here' in 2025, which Concord police investigated as possible hate crimes. Susan has expressed: 'The silence was frightening to me.' 'Beyond communicating my grief, I wanted to fill 'a vacuum' in and around Concord, where we have seen very few signs and expressions of support for and solidarity with Israel.' 'I hope the sight of the flags may inspire others to have the courage to stand up for Israel and push back at the rising antisemitism.' 'I’m not going to go hide.'
