Steven A. Cambone is an American defense official who earned a B.A. from The Catholic University of America and both an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from Claremont Graduate University. His early career included serving as a staff member in the Office of the Director at Los Alamos National Laboratory (1982-1986), Deputy Director of Strategic Analysis at SRS Technologies (1986-1990), and Director for Strategic Defense Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (1990-1993). He later worked as a Senior Fellow in Political-Military Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (1993-1998) and Staff Director for the Commission to Assess the Ballistic Missile Threat to the United States (1998). Cambone served as the first Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence (2003-2007), previously acting as Douglas Feith's principal deputy and as chief of staff to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. He has been criticized for his role in the chain of command overseeing interrogations at Abu Ghraib prison, where abuses were revealed in 2004. Following his government service, he held positions in defense-related organizations and think tanks.
