About
Steve Bennett is an American business executive with a long career in finance and technology leadership. He served as Chief Executive Officer of Symantec Corporation, a major cybersecurity and software company, from January 2012 to July 2014. Appointed to lead the company during a period of strategic transition, Bennett focused on operational efficiency, cost reductions, and repositioning Symantec's product portfolio amid competitive pressures in the antivirus and security software market. His tenure was marked by efforts to simplify the business structure and improve financial performance, though the company faced challenges including declining market share. Bennett departed Symantec in 2014 to pursue other opportunities, succeeded by Michael A. Brown as interim CEO.
Prior to Symantec, Bennett held significant roles at Intuit Inc., where he was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer from 2007 to 2011, overseeing financial strategy, investor relations, and key acquisitions for the financial software firm known for products like TurboTax and QuickBooks. Before Intuit, he spent over two decades at General Electric (GE), rising through various finance and operations positions. Notable roles included CEO of GE Capital Markets Services from 2003 to 2006, where he managed leasing and financial services, and Chief Information Officer for GE from 1999 to 2003, driving enterprise-wide technology initiatives. Earlier in his GE career, he served as CFO for GE Transportation and in other divisional leadership roles.
Bennett's educational background includes an MBA from Harvard Business School, earned in 1986, and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan, obtained in 1983. Post-Symantec, he has maintained a lower public profile but has been involved in advisory roles and board positions in the tech sector, leveraging his expertise in corporate governance and turnarounds.
