About
Sidney W. Swartz, also known as Sydney Swartz, is an American businessman and the son of Nathan Swartz, founder of The Timberland Company in 1952. He served as President and CEO of Timberland from 1986 to 1998, then as Chairman of the Board while remaining involved in management until the company's acquisition by VF Corporation in 2011. His son, Jeffrey B. Swartz, succeeded him as CEO from 1998 to 2011. The Swartz family maintained controlling ownership through Class B common stock until the 2011 sale, which provided nearly $110 million to their family foundation. Sidney, Jeffrey Swartz, and then-CFO Carrie W. Teffner were defendants in a 2011 securities class action lawsuit (City of Omaha Police and Fire Retirement System v. The Timberland Company) alleging false statements during sale discussions, violating the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and Rule 10b-5. In 1994, Sidney and his wife Judith established the Swartz Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts, which held approximately $210 million in assets as of 2023 and distributed around $7.3 million annually in grants primarily supporting Jewish causes in the United States and Israel, focusing on health, human services, community development, education, and religion; about half the grants support Israeli organizations or U.S. groups advancing Israeli interests. Trustees include Sidney, Judith, and Jeffrey Swartz; administrator Robert N. Shapiro received $323,546 in compensation in 2021. The couple resides in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and Delray Beach, Florida.
