About
Seth J. Frantzman is a journalist, analyst, author, and former academic specializing in Middle East affairs, US foreign policy, Kurds, Bedouin, and security issues. He serves as Op-Ed Editor and Analyst on Middle East Affairs, as well as Senior Middle East Correspondent, for The Jerusalem Post, and is an Adjunct Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). He is also Executive Director of the Middle East Center for Reporting and Analysis (MECRA) and has held fellowships including Ginsburg/Milstein Writing Fellow at the Middle East Forum. His academic background includes a B.A. from the University of Arizona, and an M.A. and Ph.D. (2010) in Geography from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with a thesis on Arab settlement in Ottoman and Mandatory Palestine. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of American Studies at Al-Quds University for five years, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at The Hebrew University, and held research positions at the Rubin Center for Research in International Affairs at IDC Herzliya and the Jerusalem Institute for Market Studies. He has guest lectured at The Hebrew University and Bar-Ilan University. Born in Maine, United States, he grew up at Little Lyford Pond Lodge, a remote sporting camp without electricity, was home-schooled, and attended Verde Valley School in Arizona (where he founded the literary magazine Terra Incognita) and the Orme School. Early career experiences include work with JDC, Shalem Center, and Aish Ha Torah; contributions to Tucson Weekly; brief roles in real estate and banking; presidency of College Republicans at the University of Arizona; an internship for Congressman Jim Kolbe (R-AZ); and serving as HOA president in Tucson. He has covered major events including the Gaza wars (2009, 2012, 2014), the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Kurdistan, the Ukraine conflict, refugee crises, and elections, and has interviewed figures such as Condoleezza Rice, Alan Dershowitz, and Nadia Murad. His publications include Drone Wars: Pioneers, Killing Machines, Artificial Intelligence, and the Battle for the Future (2021), After ISIS: America, Iran and the Struggle for the Middle East, and The October 7 War: Israel's Battle for Security in Gaza. He contributes to outlets like National Interest, Al-Jazeera, National Review, Forward, and National Post, as well as academic journals. Personally, he married in February 2012 and is currently based in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, United States, with primary professional activity in Israel.
