About
Sarah Elizabeth Huckabee Sanders is an American politician currently serving as the 47th Governor of Arkansas since January 2023. A prominent member of the Republican Party, she previously gained national recognition as the 31st White House Press Secretary under President Donald Trump from 2017 to 2019, becoming the third woman to hold that position. She is the daughter of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, and her political career has been deeply rooted in Republican circles, including serving as a senior advisor on Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. During her tenure as White House Press Secretary, Sanders faced criticism and controversy, particularly regarding her handling of press briefings and accusations of making misleading statements. The Mueller Report noted that she admitted to making "unplanned" statements regarding James Comey's firing that "were not founded on anything." She was also criticized for the decreasing frequency of formal press briefings towards the end of her time in the role. After leaving the White House, she became a Fox News contributor and authored a memoir, "Speaking for Myself: Faith, Freedom, and the Fight of Our Lives Inside the Trump White House." As Governor of Arkansas, Sanders has continued to be a figure of conservative policy and has faced new controversies. She signed the LEARNS Act, a comprehensive education reform bill that included school choice provisions and teacher pay raises, which drew both support and criticism. Her administration also faced scrutiny over a costly renovation project for the Governor's Mansion, including a $19,000 lectern, which prompted a state audit. Additionally, she signed legislation that significantly altered Arkansas's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) laws, making certain government records confidential, a move widely condemned by transparency advocates and media organizations. In 2022, she announced she had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and underwent surgery, later confirming she was cancer-free.
