About
Sallai Meridor is an Israeli diplomat born in Jerusalem, who earned a B.A. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He served as an intelligence officer in the Israel Defense Forces and began his career as an advisor to Moshe Arens during his tenures as Minister of Defense and Foreign Minister in the late 1980s. Meridor contributed to shaping Israel's foreign and defense policies, played a role in preparations for the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference, represented the Ministry of Defense in follow-up negotiations, and led Israel's Inter-Agency Steering Committee on Arms Control. He later held key positions in Zionist organizations, including Treasurer and Head of the Settlement Division of the World Zionist Organization, and served as Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel and the World Zionist Organization from 1999 to 2005. Appointed by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, he was Israel's Ambassador to the United States from 2006 to 2009, becoming the first ambassador from a West Bank settlement. After his diplomatic tenure, he became a founding partner of Glilot Capital Partners in 2011 and serves as International Chairman of the Jerusalem Foundation. In 2022, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of the National Library of Israel. Meridor hails from a prominent political family; his father Eliyahu Meridor was an Irgun commander and Herut Knesset member, his brother Dan Meridor a Likud minister, and his sisters Haggit Hurvitz and Avital Darmon hold notable positions in medicine and education.
