About
Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, also known as Isaac Rosenbaum, is an Israeli citizen and former Brooklyn resident who became the first person in the United States to be convicted of brokering illegal human organ transplants for profit under the National Organ Transplant Act of 1984. Operating for at least a decade as a kidney trafficking broker, he acted as a self-described 'matchmaker' in a sophisticated black market network that sourced kidneys from vulnerable individuals in Israel and sold them to wealthy recipients in the U.S. for amounts ranging from $120,000 to $160,000. His operation involved coaching donors and recipients to create fictitious personal relationships to deceive hospital ethics boards, ensuring the transplants appeared to be altruistic donations rather than commercial transactions. Rosenbaum was arrested in July 2009 as part of 'Operation Bid Rig,' a massive federal corruption and money laundering sting in New Jersey, and was the subject of the first federal prosecution of its kind. He was also a target of Solomon Dwek's investigation into international organ trafficking. Though his defense argued his actions were life-saving for patients on long waiting lists, prosecutors emphasized his massive profits and exploitation of both desperate donors and recipients.
