Roelof Frederik Botha (born September 19, 1973, in Pretoria, South Africa) is a South African-born American venture capitalist and the managing partner at Sequoia Capital. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from the University of Cape Town in 1996 and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2000. Botha began his career as chief financial officer (CFO) of PayPal from 2000 to 2003, where he played a key role in taking the company public in 2002 through its merger with eBay. In 2003, he joined Sequoia Capital as a partner, rising to become managing partner and leading the firm's U.S. and European early-stage investment franchises from 2017, serving as overall managing partner from 2022 to 2025. He is known as an early investor in groundbreaking companies including YouTube, Instagram, and Square, establishing his reputation as a visionary investor in Silicon Valley. Botha maintains a low public profile while focusing on data-driven decisions in venture capital and resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.
