Robert Peter Hannigan CMG (born 1965) is a prominent British cybersecurity expert and former senior civil servant who served as Director of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the UK's signals intelligence agency, from 2014 to 2017. He earned a history degree from the University of Cambridge and began his career in public service, holding various roles in the UK government including positions in the Cabinet Office and the Prime Minister's Office under Tony Blair. During his tenure at GCHQ, he played a key role in enhancing the UK's cyber defenses, fostering international cybersecurity partnerships, and was instrumental in establishing the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in 2016. Since 2021, he has served as Warden of Wadham College at the University of Oxford, transitioning into academic leadership while continuing to influence cybersecurity discussions. He has been recognized with the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) honor and remains active in global cyber partnerships and advisory roles.
