About
The Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank and research organization founded in 1981 by C. Fred Bergsten, initially as the Institute for International Economics (IIE). It was renamed in 2006 to honor Peter G. Peterson for his longstanding support and contributions to a capital campaign that established a sizable endowment. Based in Washington, D.C., with headquarters at 1750 Massachusetts Avenue, NW (having relocated there in 2001 from Dupont Circle), PIIE is dedicated to strengthening prosperity and human welfare in the global economy through expert analysis, practical policy solutions, and public engagement. The institute focuses on international economic policy, trade, globalization, the U.S. economy, and issues such as the US-China trade war, conducting in-depth research, providing policy recommendations, and publishing books, articles, and reports. Under the leadership of President Adam S. Posen since 2013, PIIE engages in public outreach through events, media citations, collaborations, and social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. It is widely regarded as nonpartisan by the press and neutral by the U.S. Congress, earning high rankings in global think tank indexes, including number 15 worldwide and 13 in the United States according to the 2014 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report. Described by The Washington Post as 'Washington's premier think tank on the global economy,' PIIE operates with 51-200 employees and relies on endowments and support to sustain its unbiased economic research without partisan affiliations.
