About
Peter Jay (7 February 1937 – 22 September 2024) was a British economist, diplomat, journalist, writer, and broadcaster. Born in London, England, he pursued a multifaceted career marked by a 'sinuous' path, transitioning from economic punditry and diplomacy to executive roles in broadcasting. He served as British Ambassador to the United States from 1977 to 1979, an appointment facilitated by his second marriage to Margaret Jay, daughter of former British Prime Minister James Callaghan (he was previously married to Emma Bettina Thornton). His media career included presenting influential programs such as The London Programme, A Week in Politics, and Weekend World, as well as a brief tenure as chief executive of TV-am, the pioneering breakfast television broadcaster. Following his ambassadorship, he served as the founding chairman of an organization (per contemporary reports). Jay passed away in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England, at the age of 87.
