About
Peter J. Camiel (January 30, 1910 – January 31, 1991) was a prominent American politician from Pennsylvania, born and raised in Philadelphia. He served as a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania State Senate representing the 3rd district from 1953 to 1964, focusing on legislative matters pertinent to Philadelphia and surrounding areas, and establishing himself as a steadfast advocate for Democratic principles at the state level. Beyond his senatorial role, Camiel emerged as an influential leader in Philadelphia's Democratic Party during the 1960s, playing a pivotal part in the city's machine politics through significant leadership positions in ward leadership and city committee roles. He contributed to the Democratic Party's stronghold in Philadelphia until challenges from reform movements and rival factions altered the power structure. Politically opposed to Arlen Specter, Camiel reflected internal and partisan tensions during a period of shifting political landscapes in Pennsylvania. He passed away in Philadelphia at age 81.
