Peter Lampert Bergen (born December 12, 1962, in London, England, to American parents) is an acclaimed American journalist, author, documentary producer, and national security expert specializing in terrorism and counterterrorism. He serves as CNN's national security analyst and is the vice president for global studies and director of the International Security Program at New America, where he also directs international security studies. Bergen gained prominence in the 1990s as a CNN producer, orchestrating the first televised interview with Osama bin Laden in 1997, during which bin Laden declared war on the United States. He earned a BA in modern history from New College, University of Oxford in 1983. Bergen has authored or edited ten books on national security, with three becoming New York Times bestsellers and four recognized as top non-fiction by The Washington Post; his works are translated into 25 languages. He serves as a professor of practice at Arizona State University, produces Emmy-nominated documentaries, and frequently contributes to major media outlets. Bergen has testified before Congress and plays a significant role in national security debates, including publicly criticizing figures such as Sebastian Gorka.
