About
Cornelis Piet 'Pete' Hoekstra (born October 30, 1953) is an American politician, diplomat, and business executive affiliated with the Republican Party. He served as a U.S. Representative from Michigan, representing the state's 2nd congressional district from 1993 to 2011. During his congressional tenure, he chaired the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (also referred to as the House Intelligence Committee) from 2004 to 2007 and again from 2007 to 2011, focusing on national security. Known for his conservative stance on national security, counterterrorism, and fiscal policy, Hoekstra was a vocal advocate for enhanced intelligence capabilities and criticized the Obama administration's handling of national security issues. After leaving Congress, he transitioned to the private sector as a vice president at Herman Miller, a Michigan-based furniture manufacturer. In 2017, President Donald Trump nominated Hoekstra as U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands, a position he held from 2018 to 2021, where his Dutch heritage added a personal dimension to his work strengthening U.S.-Dutch relations. In 2025, he was appointed as the 33rd U.S. Ambassador to Canada by President Trump, continuing his diplomatic career. Hoekstra remains active in conservative circles, serving on the board of the Center for Security Policy and advocating for strong U.S. alliances and robust intelligence oversight.
