About
Payton S. Gendron is an American white supremacist and mass murderer who perpetrated the 2022 Buffalo supermarket shooting, a racially motivated attack that killed 10 Black people and injured three others at a Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in Buffalo, New York, on May 14, 2022. Born on June 20, 2003, Gendron was 18 years old at the time of the shooting, which he livestreamed on Twitch until the platform shut it down within two minutes. The attack was driven by white supremacist ideology, including the 'great replacement' theory, and Gendron was influenced by figures such as Brenton Tarrant, the perpetrator of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings. Prior to the attack, Gendron had expressed online his racist views and planned the shooting targeting a predominantly Black neighborhood.
Gendron, a resident of Conklin, New York, was arrested at the scene and charged with 27 counts of first-degree murder and other offenses under New York state law, as well as federal hate crimes and firearms charges. In November 2022, he was identified as planning another school shooting, leading to his placement under suicide watch. On February 15, 2023, Gendron pleaded guilty to all state charges and was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. Federal proceedings continue, with allegations of domestic terrorism. His actions have been widely condemned as a manifestation of online radicalization and white supremacist extremism.
