About
Paul Miki Nakasone is a retired United States Army four-star general renowned for his leadership in cybersecurity and intelligence. Born on November 19, 1963, in Tokyo, Japan, to a Japanese-American family with a strong military background—his father was a U.S. Army colonel—Nakasone grew up immersed in the values of service and discipline. He pursued a military career, graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. He later earned a Master of Arts in International Relations from Auburn University in 1992 and a Master of Science in Information Systems Management from Webster University in 2003, enhancing his expertise in strategic and technical domains. Nakasone's career spanned over three decades, beginning as an infantry officer after his commissioning from West Point. He held various command and staff positions, including roles in signal and cyber operations. In October 2016, he assumed command of the United States Second Army and Army Cyber Command, a pivotal role until the Second Army's inactivation in March 2017. His expertise led to his appointment in May 2018 as Commander of United States Cyber Command and Director of the National Security Agency (NSA), serving concurrently as Chief of the Central Security Service—a unique 'triple hat' leadership structure unprecedented at the time. In these roles, he oversaw signals intelligence and cyber operations. Under his tenure, which lasted until his retirement in 2024, Nakasone spearheaded advancements in cyber defense, offensive capabilities, and international partnerships to counter global cyber threats from nation-states like China, Russia, and North Korea. As a key figure in U.S. national security, Nakasone emphasized persistent engagement in cyberspace and collaboration with allies, contributing to policies that strengthened America's cyber posture. His Japanese heritage and multilingual capabilities, including proficiency in Japanese, informed his approach to Indo-Pacific security challenges. Post-retirement, Nakasone remains an influential voice in cybersecurity discussions, advising on emerging threats and the integration of artificial intelligence in intelligence operations.
