About
Pamela Geller (born June 14, 1958) is an American far-right political activist, blogger, author, commentator, and co-founder and president of the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI). She is best known for her staunch anti-Islam advocacy and leadership in organizations opposing what she describes as the Islamization of America, including Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) and Stop Islamization of Nations (SION). Geller began her career in the 1980s in financial analysis, advertising, and marketing at the New York Daily News, later serving as associate publisher of The New York Observer from 1989 to 1994 before resigning to focus on family. In 2004, she launched her influential blog, Atlas Shrugs, which became a platform for her views portraying Islam as a threat to Western civilization.
Through AFDI, she has run provocative and controversial anti-Muslim advertising campaigns on public transit systems, including opposition to the 2010 Ground Zero Mosque and subway ads from 2012 to 2015 depicting Muslims negatively. These campaigns sparked widespread controversy and legal battles over free speech, with some ads upheld by court rulings and others condemned. In 2015, Geller organized the "Draw Muhammad" contest in Garland, Texas, which was targeted by a terrorist attack thwarted by police. Her activism has drawn strong criticism and accusations of Islamophobia and hate speech; organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center have labeled her a leading anti-Muslim figure and designated her groups as hate organizations. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has sued her multiple times. Her work was cited in the 2011 manifesto of Norwegian mass shooter Anders Breivik, though she condemned the attack.
Geller has authored several books, including The Post-American Presidency (2010), FATWA: Hunted in America (2012), and Stop the Islamization of America, articulating her views on perceived Islamist threats. She is also known for promoting conspiracy theories, including birtherism claims that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya and was a Muslim. Politically, she supported Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. Due to her views and activism, she has been banned from entering countries such as the United Kingdom, starting in 2013, and Canada for promoting hate.
A Jewish-American, Geller divorced Michael Oshry in 2007, receiving a nearly $4 million settlement; Oshry died in 2008, leaving $5 million to their daughters through life insurance. Her financial interests include leadership roles in AFDI and related entities like the American Freedom Law Center. Geller continues to maintain a network of far-right influencers through her blog, organizations, and media presence, facing ongoing allegations of bigotry and conspiracy-mongering.
