About
Omicron Delta Kappa (ΟΔΚ), commonly known as ODK or The Circle, is a prestigious American collegiate leadership honor society founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. The society recognizes students for outstanding achievement in scholarship, athletics, service, leadership, social/religious activities, and journalism/mass media/speech/fine arts. Membership is selective, requiring candidates to rank in the top 35 percent of their institution's student body and hold significant leadership positions in at least one of these domains. The society's inaugural class was initiated in May 1915, and it expanded nationally in 1916 with chapters at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania. Today, ODK has chartered over 400 chapters across the United States, fostering a network of more than 300,000 members. As a member of the Honor Society Caucus alongside organizations like Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Xi, Omicron Delta Kappa emphasizes the development of well-rounded leaders committed to service and integrity. The society operates through campus circles where members engage in programming, mentorship, and recognition events. Notable members include influential figures such as former U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. The organization maintains a non-secretive yet tradition-rich structure with symbols like the gold key worn by members, and continues to promote inclusive leadership and community engagement.
