About
Norma Kaphan (1924-2018) was an American advertising professional best known as the first wife of renowned journalist Mike Wallace and the mother of journalist Chris Wallace. Born Norma Mae Kaphan, she met Mike Wallace at the University of Michigan, where they were students, and married him in 1940 shortly after graduation. The couple had one son, Christopher (Chris) Wallace, born on May 12, 1947. Their marriage was brief, ending in divorce in 1948 amid the strains of Mike Wallace's early career and post-World War II adjustments. Following the divorce, Kaphan raised their young son as a single mother while establishing a career in the advertising industry, working in various capacities in New York City. She maintained a relatively private life after her divorce from Wallace, who went on to become a prominent figure on CBS's 60 Minutes. Kaphan remarried later in life to Edward L. Bok, though details of that union are sparse. She was described by her son Chris as a strong, independent woman who instilled in him a love for journalism and public service. She lived much of her later years in the Boston area and passed away on September 10, 2018, at the age of 94 in Brookline, Massachusetts. Her legacy is primarily tied to her influence on her son's career and her role in the early life of one of broadcast journalism's most famous families.
