About
Sir Nicholas William Peter Clegg (born 7 January 1967) is a British retired politician and media executive. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2010 to 2015 under the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government led by David Cameron, and was Leader of the Liberal Democrats from 2007 to 2015, representing Sheffield Hallam as MP from 2005 to 2017. Known as an 'Orange Book' liberal, he advocated for socially and economically liberal policies including electoral reform, civil liberties, and environmental issues. His leadership saw the Liberal Democrats enter government for the first time in decades, though the coalition's austerity measures and tuition fee policy reversal led to significant electoral losses in 2015, prompting his resignation. After leaving politics, Clegg transitioned to the private sector, working at Ditchley Foundation before joining Facebook (now Meta Platforms) in 2018 as Vice President of Global Affairs and Communications, rising to President of Global Affairs in 2022. In this role, he focuses on regulatory and policy matters, privacy, content moderation, and digital rights advocacy. He is married to Spanish lawyer Miriam González Durántez and has three sons, with Dutch and multinational family ties including ancestry linked to Russian nobility.
