About
Naama Lazimi is an Israeli politician serving as a Knesset member for the Democrats party, following the party's merger with Meretz in 2024. She was born and raised in Migdal HaEmek to parents of Moroccan Jewish origin. Her father, Avi, was a school principal and deputy mayor, while her mother owns a cosmetics business. She holds a bachelor's in political science and a master's in Jewish history from the University of Haifa, where she was vice-chair of the Student Association, and completed the 'Leadership in the Jewish World' program. She served in the IDF as an officer in the Ministry of Defense and later as a reserve sergeant-major in the Home Front Command. Active in labor rights with Koah LaOvdim (2012-2018), she chaired its finance committee and organized worker struggles. She founded the 'Vision' center for political training within Peace Now (2017), advised MK Shelly Yachimovich (2016), and consulted for the Jewish National Fund. Involved in feminist organizations like Ishah LaIsha, she moved to Haifa's Hadar HaCarmel in the 2010s and was elected to Haifa City Council in 2018 on the 'Life in Haifa' list, chairing the Gender Equality Committee and Haifa Museums board, while serving on Audit, Welfare, Construction Committees, and the Shikmona public housing board. She facilitated collaboration between Technion and ORT Braude College via ISEF. Elected to the 24th Knesset (2021) for the Labor Party via the Norwegian Law after Omer Bar-Lev's resignation, she served on the Finance, Women Status Promotion, Internal Security Committees, and Special Committee on Citizen Fund. Re-elected to the 25th Knesset (2022) in second place on the Labor list, she switched to The Democrats in 2024. Currently, she chairs the Special Committee on Youth Affairs / Young Israelis and serves on the Finance and Education, Culture and Sports Committees. She has passed laws including amendments for immediate sick pay for cancer patients and has investigated Sara Netanyahu. Self-identifying as social-democratic, feminist, peace-seeking, left-wing Zionist, traditional, and liberal, she supports a Jewish-democratic state, two-state solution, and LGBT rights, while criticizing Mizrahi discrimination, anti-Zionism in the left, and far-right figures like Itamar Ben-Gvir. She endorsed Yair Golan for Labor leadership (2024) and participated in 2023 judicial reform protests, where she was injured by a sponge grenade, blocked highways, and lit bonfires for elections and hostage return. In February 2025, during a Finance Committee session, she claimed Yair Netanyahu was exiled abroad after assaulting the PM, incurring NIS 2.5M in security costs, prompting condemnation from Likud and a lawsuit from Yair. Married to Avraham (Avi) Motehdah, a high school teacher, author (Minister of Culture Award recipient), and researcher on Iranian Judaism at the University of Haifa and former Shas civic council member, she is mother to Rona Esther and Ariel Zion. She resides in Holon (moved from Haifa's Kiryat Eliezer/Hadar in 2023). A relative, Staff Sgt. Dor Lazimi (21), was killed on October 7, 2023, at the Nahal Oz outpost.
