About
Mu'taz Hijazi was a Palestinian militant and member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), a designated terrorist organization. Born around 1982 in East Jerusalem, he grew up in the Sur Baher neighborhood and had a background involving prior arrests by Israeli authorities for security-related offenses, including a period of imprisonment. On October 29, 2014, Hijazi carried out an assassination attempt on Yehuda Glick, a prominent Israeli right-wing activist and advocate for Jewish access to the Temple Mount, outside the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem. Hijazi approached Glick and shot him multiple times at close range before fleeing on a motorcycle. Israeli security forces pursued him to his nearby home in Sur Baher, where he was killed in a shootout with police. The attack severely wounded Glick, who survived after surgery. Hijazi's funeral in East Jerusalem drew hundreds of mourners under heavy Israeli police presence, and his death was mourned by PIJ as martyrdom while Israeli officials described him as a terrorist. His actions exemplified the cycle of militancy and retaliation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
