About
Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani (born April 19, 1957, in Aden, then a British protectorate, now Yemen) is an Indian billionaire businessman of Gujarati Hindu ethnicity. He serves as chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a multinational conglomerate founded by his father Dhirubhai Ambani. After growing up in Mumbai following his family's relocation in 1958, he studied chemical engineering at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai and briefly pursued an MBA at Stanford University before dropping out in 1980 to join the family business in 1981. Under his leadership since taking over after his father's death in 2002, Reliance has diversified from petrochemicals into telecommunications (Jio), retail, digital services, and green energy, becoming one of India's largest companies by market capitalization. As of December 2025, he is recognized as Asia's richest person and the 16th wealthiest globally, with a net worth of US$112.8 billion derived largely from his stakes in Reliance entities. His business achievements include driving India's digital revolution through Jio's affordable data services, though he has faced criticism for alleged monopolistic practices and environmental concerns. He has been involved in high-profile projects like the world's most expensive private residence, Antilia, in Mumbai, and maintains business consultations with international figures such as Rupert Murdoch. Personally, he married Nita Ambani in 1981, with whom he has three children: twins Akash and Isha, and Anant. Nita Ambani founded the Reliance Foundation, focusing on philanthropy in education, healthcare, and sports. Legally, he faced a 2017-2018 CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in the KG-D6 gas field project, though no convictions resulted. Politically, he maintains close ties to the Indian government, with Reliance benefiting from policy supports, and has been accused of influencing regulatory decisions, though these remain unproven allegations.
