About
Moshe Lion, also known as Moshe Leon, born on 6 October 1961 in Ashkelon, Israel, to a family of Moroccan Jewish immigrants, is a certified public accountant with a B.A. in economics and accounting from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He began his career in business and public administration, serving as Chairman of Israel Railways from 2002 to 2005, director-general of the Prime Minister's Office under Ariel Sharon and later Benjamin Netanyahu from 2005 to 2007, CEO of Bezeq International, and holding other executive roles, before fully entering politics. A member of the Likud party, he previously served as head of the Jerusalem Development Authority and a member of the Jerusalem City Council. Lion ran for mayor independently with support from Netanyahu and ultra-Orthodox factions, and was elected Mayor of Jerusalem in 2018 after a contentious runoff against Nir Barkat, with re-election in 2024. His tenure has focused on urban development, haredi integration, and East Jerusalem issues, while drawing criticism for policies perceived as favoring certain communities, handling of events like the 2021 Flag March violence, allegations of mismanagement during COVID-19, and tensions with settler groups.
