About
Miriam Horn is a prominent American environmental writer, journalist, filmmaker, editor, communications executive, and advocate, best known for her work on climate innovation, sustainable agriculture, and conservation. Born in 1978, she holds a BA from Harvard University (2000) and completed two years of post-baccalaureate study in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University (2002). Her career began with fieldwork at the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado, where she engaged in timber management, trail construction, mine reclamation, and environmental education. She then spent 15 years as a journalist, including as a senior writer, for major publications including The New York Times, U.S. News & World Report, Smithsonian, Vanity Fair, and The New Republic, covering environmental and social issues. In 2004, she joined the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), where she currently serves as Vice President of Strategy and Communications, focusing on environmental storytelling, policy advocacy, and communications strategy for clean energy and agricultural sustainability. Horn is the author and co-author of several influential books: 'Rebels in White Gloves: Coming of Age with Hillary's Class, Wellesley '69' (1999); the New York Times bestselling 'Earth: The Sequel: The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming' (2008/2009), co-authored with EDF President Fred Krupp; 'Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman: Conservation Heroes of the American Heartland' (2016), praised by Kirkus Reviews and the American Farm Bureau and named a best book by Kirkus; and 'Homesick for a World Unknown' (2024), the first biography of pioneering field biologist George Schaller. She adapted 'Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman' into a documentary film that premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and aired on Discovery Channel. Horn has also produced other documentaries and contributed to environmental media as a Japan Society Media Fellow (2012). She resides in the South San Juan Mountains of Colorado, where her work emphasizes practical, large-scale solutions to environmental challenges, bridging science, policy, and personal narratives to advocate for conservation heroes and innovative practices in agriculture and energy.
