About
Michèle Yvette Marie-Thérèse Jeanne Honorine Alliot-Marie, commonly known as MAM, is a prominent French politician, diplomat, and jurist born on September 10, 1946, in Albi, France. She has had a distinguished career spanning several decades, beginning in the 1970s as a key figure in right-wing governments. Alliot-Marie served as a member of the National Assembly and held multiple ministerial positions, including Minister of Youth and Sports (1993–1995), Minister of Defense (2002–2007), Minister of the Interior (2007–2009), Minister of Justice (2009–2010), and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs (2010–2011), where she was granted the honorary rank of Minister of State. As Minister of the Interior, she oversaw security and public order policies, making her the first woman to hold several high-profile roles in the French government. Throughout her career, she was affiliated with the Rally for the Republic and later The Republicans party. After leaving national government, she was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for France, representing the European People's Party group, and remained active in European politics until at least 2019. Known for her conservative stance on security and defense issues, she has been both praised for her leadership in crisis management and criticized for policies on immigration and security. She comes from a politically influential family, with her father, Michel Jeantet, being a Gaullist politician. Post-politics, she has remained active in public discourse on European and international affairs.
