About
Meng Yang is a Peking University scholar and Assistant Professor in Beijing, China, pioneering Jewish studies in the country. Native to Shanghai with Shanghainese as her mother tongue, she began her academic career as a German major and earned a Ph.D. in Germany focused on Jewish exiles and refugees in Shanghai during the Shoah (Holocaust), during which she learned Yiddish. She attended a two-week Holocaust education program at Yad Vashem in Israel on scholarship and a full scholarship summer Yiddish program at Tel Aviv University. Yang founded China's first general education courses on 'Jewish Civilization in a Global Context' (enrollment grew to nearly 800 students per semester after October 7, 2023) and 'Yiddish Language and Jewish Culture,' and launched the first university-level Yiddish language course in mainland China on September 7, 2022, attracting students from diverse majors like psychology, engineering, and law. Her research interests include the Jewish community and refugees (Shanghailanders) in Shanghai during the Shoah, Holocaust education in China, antisemitism in China (online tropes, nationalist intellectuals, post-October 7 dynamics) and globally, Yiddish literature and theatre, Sino-Israeli relations and innovation cooperation, and Jewish civilization. She has published scholarly works on Holocaust education in China, global antisemitism, Jewish exile in Shanghai, Sino-Israeli cooperation, and Jewish civilization, and is a singer and co-writer of the first Chinese-Yiddish song published by Forward. Yang is a fellow at Yad Vashem (Israel), Salzburg Global Seminar (Austria), Tikvah Fund (USA), Kathryn Davis (USA), and London Centre for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism, and a member of the Association for Israel Studies and Association for Jewish Studies. She has delivered lectures in the USA, Canada, Israel, China, and Germany, with upcoming talks including one at Stanford University in February 2026 on 'Antisemitism in China and the Chinese Diaspora.'
