Meir Ben-Shabbat is an Israeli security official who served as National Security Advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and head of the National Security Council (NSC) from 2017 to 2021. He is a 25-year veteran of Israel's General Security Service (Shin Bet or Shabak), having joined the agency in 1989 and served for over 28 years, rising to become head of its Southern Region. Appointed by Prime Minister Netanyahu on August 13, 2017, he was involved in key security challenges such as countering Iranian advances in Syria. In his NSC role, he led an Israeli delegation to the United Arab Emirates following the 2020 peace agreement and participated in government briefings on the COVID-19 epidemic. He resigned from his positions in July 2021, effective late August 2021. Subsequently, he has worked as a security consultant and currently serves as head of the Misgav Institute.
