About
Max Hill KC (formerly QC) is a prominent British barrister specializing in criminal law, appointed as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for England and Wales in November 2017 and assuming office on 6 November 2018, succeeding Alison Saunders. He leads the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), an independent organization responsible for prosecuting criminal cases in England and Wales. Called to the Bar by Gray's Inn in 1989, he became Queen's Counsel in 2007 (now King's Counsel since 2022). Prior to his national role, he served as Recorder of the Crown Court from 2007 and was Chief Executive and Director of the CPS for London from 2012 to 2017. His career has focused on prosecuting serious and complex cases, including terrorism, organized crime, sexual offenses, and public order offenses, such as those following the 2019 London Bridge attack and COVID-19 lockdown breaches. As DPP, he oversees major criminal cases involving extremism and public order offenses, emphasizing fair and effective justice, prosecutorial independence, and addressing challenges like digital evidence. He has advocated for reforms in joint enterprise law and rape case handling, amid scrutiny over CPS performance and conviction rates. No major personal controversies are documented.
