Born on January 1, 1975, he has held significant roles in the U.S. government during the Donald Trump administration, including positions at the Treasury Department, National Security Council, and State Department. He served as Senior Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the National Security Council from 2017 to 2018 and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Cuba and Venezuela. Claver-Carone began his career as an Attorney-Advisor for the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, providing counsel on banking laws, capital requirements, and securitizations. In October 2020, Claver-Carone was nominated and elected as the first American President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), a multilateral institution focused on Latin America and the Caribbean, serving in that role until his resignation on September 26, 2022, following an ethics investigation related to personal conduct. Prior to his IDB tenure, he advised on Latin American policy and was executive director of Cuba Democracy Advocates. His work has emphasized a hardline stance on Cuba, influencing U.S. policy through lobbying and advocacy efforts.
Claver-Carone's educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts from Rollins College, a Juris Doctor from The Catholic University of America, and a Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center.
