About
Mateusz Jakub Morawiecki is a prominent Polish economist and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Poland from 2017 to 2023. A key figure in the conservative and nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, known for his nationalist and conservative policies. His political career began after an extensive background in the business sector, particularly in banking. Prior to his premiership, Morawiecki held significant ministerial roles in the cabinet of Prime Minister Beata Szydło, including Deputy Prime Minister (2015-2017), Minister of Development (2015-2018), and Minister of Finance (2016-2018). His tenure as Prime Minister was characterized by a focus on conservative social policies, economic nationalism, and significant reforms, some of which led to tensions with the European Union over rule of law and judicial independence. He is the son of Kornel Morawiecki, a notable anti-communist dissident and founder of Fighting Solidarity. Controversies during his time in office include allegations of improper land acquisition by him and his wife in the early 2000s, which he denied, and widespread criticism from the European Union regarding judicial reforms that were perceived as undermining democratic standards. His government also faced international scrutiny over legislative proposals affecting media freedom. Despite these challenges, Morawiecki remained a central figure in Polish politics, advocating for a strong, sovereign Poland within the European Union.
