About
Mark David Madoff (1964-2010) was the eldest son of Bernard Madoff and an American financier who worked in the legitimate market-making operations of his father's firm, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities (BLMIS), joining in the early 1980s after college. On December 10, 2008, Mark and his brother Andrew contacted authorities after their father confessed to them that BLMIS had been operating a massive Ponzi scheme as a fraudulent investment advisory business, leading to Bernard's arrest the next day and the revelation of losses estimated at $65 billion. Mark cooperated fully with federal investigators and was cleared of any involvement in the fraud, with no criminal charges filed against him; civil lawsuits alleging complicity were dismissed posthumously by courts, finding no evidence of his knowledge or participation. In the aftermath of the scandal, Mark endured severe public backlash, media scrutiny, and personal devastation, including the suicide of his brother Andrew in 2014. Struggling with the fallout, he died by suicide on December 11, 2010—two years to the day after his father's confession—by hanging in the living room of his luxury apartment in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood. He was 46 years old and survived by his second wife, Susan Ashley Madoff, whom he married in 2004, and two children (a son and a daughter) from his first marriage to Allison Kaye Madoff (divorced 2000).
