Mark Joseph Carney is a prominent Canadian economist and banker known for his influential roles in central banking, global finance, and climate finance. Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, he grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, and pursued higher education in the United States and United Kingdom. Carney began his career at Goldman Sachs in London and Toronto, working in investment banking and risk management. He later joined the Canadian Department of Finance, rising to senior positions before being appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2008, where he navigated the country through the global financial crisis. In 2013, he became the first non-British Governor of the Bank of England, serving until 2020 and earning praise for his forward-thinking approaches to monetary policy and financial stability. After leaving the Bank of England, Carney has focused on climate change and sustainable finance. He served as the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance from 2020 to 2023 and chairs the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero.
