Margaret Claire Hoover, born December 11, 1977, in Colorado, is a CNN political contributor (since 2012) and host of PBS's Firing Line with Margaret Hoover (since 2018) and SiriusXM's Get It Right with Margaret Hoover. She is the great-granddaughter of U.S. President Herbert Hoover and Lou Henry Hoover, daughter of mining engineer Andrew Hoover and former flight attendant Jean Williams. A Republican with libertarian views on social issues, she advocates for gay rights and authored American Individualism (2011). Her career includes roles as a former adviser to Vets for Freedom, staffer for Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart, Associate Director of Intergovernmental Affairs in the George W. Bush administration, advisor to the Department of Homeland Security, and contributor to Fox News (2008-2012). She is president of the American Unity Fund and serves on boards including the Hoover Institution. Married to journalist John Avlon since 2009, they have two children and reside in New York City.
