About
Marc Nadon, born on September 7, 1949, is a Canadian jurist with a distinguished career in law. He holds an LL.L. degree and has practiced law extensively in Quebec and the United Kingdom, specializing in maritime and transportation law. Nadon also served as an arbitrator and was a former lecturer in law at the Université de Sherbrooke, contributing to legal education in Canada. He was appointed as a judge to the Federal Court of Appeal of Canada, where he served until becoming a supernumerary judge. In October 2013, Prime Minister Stephen Harper nominated him to the Supreme Court of Canada as a puisne justice, representing the Quebec bar. However, the appointment sparked significant controversy regarding his eligibility under the Supreme Court Act, and the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Nadon did not meet the criteria. As a result, he was unable to be sworn in and returned to his role on the Federal Court of Appeal as a supernumerary judge. The episode highlighted debates on judicial appointments and constitutional interpretation in Canada.
