Malcolm Wrightson Nance (born September 20, 1961) is an American author, media commentator, and retired U.S. Navy intelligence officer renowned for his expertise in counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and national security. He served 20 years in the Navy from 1981 to 2001, rising to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer in naval cryptology, where he specialized in human and signals intelligence on counterterrorism operations in global hotspots including the Middle East. Post-retirement, he continued intelligence work with agencies like the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and consulted for the CIA on detainee interrogations and counter-radicalization. As a prominent media figure, Nance serves as a national security analyst for MSNBC, providing commentary on global threats, U.S. foreign policy, and domestic security issues. He gained widespread recognition during the 2016 U.S. presidential election for warning about Russian interference and has been a vocal critic of authoritarian regimes and far-right extremism. Nance has authored several books on terrorism including 'The Plot to Betray America' (2019) and 'Defeating ISIS' (2016). In 2020, he briefly ran as a Democratic candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania's 2nd district but withdrew to focus on his media and writing career. He has been involved in humanitarian efforts including training Ukrainian forces against Russian aggression since 2014, and founded the International Security Education Center think tank to combat extremism.
