Malam Nuhu Ribadu, born on November 21, 1960, in Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria, is a prominent Nigerian lawyer, law enforcement official, and politician of Fulani heritage from northern Nigeria. He earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1980-1983), was called to the Bar at the Nigerian Law School in 1984, and later obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) from Ahmadu Bello University with an emphasis on the jurisprudence of corruption. Ribadu joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1984 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police, serving as a police prosecutor and advancing to roles such as Assistant Commissioner of Police in Kaduna. In 2003, he was appointed by President Olusegun Obasanjo as the pioneer Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he led high-profile prosecutions against corrupt politicians and business leaders until 2007. Following Obasanjo's departure, Ribadu faced demotion, harassment, and exile in the UK until his 2010 reinstatement by court order. He has been accused of selective anti-corruption efforts that targeted political opponents while sparing allies, and criticized for blending political ambitions with his anti-corruption legacy. Entering politics around 2010, Ribadu ran unsuccessfully for President in 2011 as the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate and contested the Adamawa State gubernatorial elections unsuccessfully in 2015 (PDP), 2019, and 2023 (APC).
