About
Elizabeth "Liz" Magill is an American academic administrator and legal scholar specializing in administrative and constitutional law, and the former President of the University of Pennsylvania. Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, she earned a bachelor's degree in history from Yale University in 1988. Following graduation, she worked as a senior legislative assistant for energy and natural resources for U.S. Senator Kent Conrad, gaining early experience in politics. She later pursued legal education at the University of Virginia School of Law, earning a Juris Doctor degree, and acquired experience at the U.S. Supreme Court prior to entering higher education. Magill joined the University of Virginia School of Law faculty in 1997, serving for 15 years and rising to the Joseph Weintraub–Bank of America Distinguished Professor of Law. She held senior leadership roles at UVA, including provost and executive vice president. In 2022, she became the 10th President of the University of Pennsylvania, serving until her resignation in December 2023 following a congressional hearing on campus antisemitism, where her equivocal testimony on antisemitic speech drew widespread criticism, donor backlash, and public outcry. Her brief tenure highlighted tensions in university leadership regarding free speech, diversity, and campus safety. Post-resignation, Magill has maintained a lower public profile.
