About
Leon Levy (born September 13, 1925; died April 6, 2003) was an American investor, mutual fund manager, banker, and art collector who pioneered developments in both mutual funds and hedge funds. The son of economic analyst Jerome Levy, he co-founded OppenheimerFunds and was described by Forbes magazine upon his death as 'a Wall Street investment genius.' A prominent philanthropist and Bard College trustee, Levy held leadership roles in academia and philanthropy, including President of the Board of the Institute for Advanced Study, Vice Chairman of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, and service on numerous not-for-profit boards. Together with his wife Shelby White, he funded initiatives such as the conservation of the Lod Mosaic and the establishment of the Shelby White and Leon Levy Lod Mosaic Archaeological Center. The Leon Levy Foundation, established in his name, supports biography, archaeology, and other causes through institutions like the CUNY Graduate Center's Leon Levy Center for Biography.
