About
Larry Robbins (born October 22, 1969) is an American hedge fund manager, philanthropist, and sports team owner. Raised in a Jewish family in Arlington Heights, Illinois, he graduated with honors in 1992 from the University of Pennsylvania's Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology, earning a B.S. in economics with concentrations in accounting, finance, and marketing from the Wharton School, and a B.S. in engineering with a major in systems engineering from the Moore School. He became a Certified Public Accountant in Illinois in 1991. An avid hockey enthusiast since childhood—having played in the Glenview area and captained Penn's club team—Robbins owns the Chicago Steel junior hockey team. He resides in Alpine, New Jersey, with his wife Sarahmay Wesemael (married 2012; previously divorced from Amy Towers) and six sons.
Robbins founded Glenview Capital Management in 2000, serving as its CEO and portfolio manager. The hedge fund, which manages billions in assets (approximately $7.7 billion as of March 2019), is known for its long-term investment strategy, deep fundamental research, and focus on healthcare sectors, including successful bets on hospital companies benefiting from Obamacare in 2012. Prior to Glenview, he spent six years as an analyst and partner on the U.S. equity long/short team at Omega Advisors under Leon Cooperman, following three years at Gleacher & Company, a merger advisory boutique in New York. He also chairs Longview Acquisition Corp. II, a sponsor of SPACs that has raised over $1 billion, and serves on the board of Butterfly Network, Inc.
Through the Robbins Family Foundation, he supports education reform, chairing the board of KIPP New York and serving on boards including Robin Hood Foundation, Zearn, Relay Graduate School of Education, and as Senior Chair of the Wall Street Division of UJA-Federation.
