About
Larry Paul Arnn (born October 8, 1952) is an American educator, author, and academic administrator who has served as the 12th president of Hillsdale College, a private conservative liberal arts institution in Hillsdale, Michigan, since May 2000. At Hillsdale, he is also a professor of politics and history, where he emphasizes classical education rooted in Western heritage and limited government principles. Arnn earned his B.A. from Arkansas State University, followed by an M.A. in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1985 in Government from Claremont Graduate School. He also studied international history at the London School of Economics and modern history at Worcester College, Oxford, while working as director of research for Sir Martin Gilbert, Winston Churchill's official biographer. His career includes roles as an editor for Public Research and associations with conservative think tanks such as the Claremont Institute and The Heartland Institute, where he serves as a trustee. Arnn's writings and public engagements focus on themes of liberty, education reform, and American constitutionalism, aligning with his promotion of Hillsdale's non-federal funding model to maintain institutional independence. Under his leadership, Hillsdale College has become a prominent hub for conservative intellectualism, known for its resistance to progressive trends in higher education.
