About
Kurt Kohr (December 28, 1925 – 2013) was born in Vienna, Austria, into a Jewish family. During World War II, he was imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp for five years, enduring slave labor under Nazi oppression. He escaped and joined partisan fighters resisting the Nazi regime. After the war, he immigrated to the United States, settling in the Cleveland area of Ohio, where he became an American citizen and veteran. He notably fought with the Haganah during Israel's War of Independence in 1948, which played a pivotal role in the founding of modern Israel. In the U.S., he established and owned a successful business in Beachwood, Ohio, and contributed to Jewish and Israeli causes by co-founding the Kerem Maharal moshav in Israel. He was known for his volunteer work and community involvement. As the father of Howard Kohr, a dedicated advocate for Jewish and pro-Israel causes, Kurt's personal history as a Holocaust survivor, freedom fighter, and veteran profoundly influenced his son's career and commitment. He passed away in 2013 at age 87 in Beachwood, Ohio, leaving a legacy of resilience and activism.
