About
Kristen Kellie Waggoner (born January 1, 1972) is an American attorney and conservative legal advocate who serves as the president, CEO, and general counsel of Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a prominent Christian nonprofit legal organization specializing in religious liberty, anti-abortion litigation, and traditional family values. She assumed these leadership roles in 2022, having previously served as senior vice president of the U.S. Legal Division at ADF starting in 2017, and as a senior counsel since joining the organization in 2007. Waggoner has argued several landmark cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, including Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission (2018), which ruled in favor of a Christian baker's right to refuse service for same-sex weddings on religious grounds, as well as NIFLA v. Becerra (2018) and Uzuegbunam v. Preczewski (2021). She earned a B.A. in communications from Corban University (formerly Western Baptist College) in 1994 and a J.D. from Regent University School of Law in 1997, practicing law in Arizona and Virginia before joining ADF. Her work draws praise from conservative circles for advancing Christian causes and criticism from progressive groups for allegedly promoting discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals and restricting reproductive rights. Personally, Waggoner is a devout evangelical Christian, married to Doug Waggoner since 1998, with three children, and resides in Arizona.
