About
Keren Hayesod-United Israel Appeal is a global fundraising organization established in 1920 in London as the primary financial arm of the Zionist movement, founded in the aftermath of the 1917 Balfour Declaration. It serves as the official fundraising organization for Israel, operating in 45 countries outside the United States as a worldwide network that collects donations from Jewish communities to support immigration (Aliyah), education, and social services in Israel. Over the decades, it has played a pivotal role in building Israel's foundational institutions, including funding the national airline El Al, the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hebrew University, and various educational, industrial, and social services projects. As part of the World Zionist Organization, which oversees its financial operations, Keren Hayesod has resettled hundreds of thousands of Jews, created housing and employment opportunities, and established settlements and towns, contributing significantly to the growth and progress of Israeli society. The organization has evolved into the preeminent worldwide fundraising network for Israel, financing national and public organizations essential to Israel's development while promoting the strengthening of Israeli society and the enrichment of the Jewish Diaspora through cultural and communal ties.
In the United States, it operates as a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, serving as the American arm of Keren Hayesod and raising funds from U.S. Jews for Israeli causes. This U.S. entity acts as a link between the American Jewish community and the people of Israel, is a subsidiary of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), and is responsible for the allocation and oversight of funds raised by United States Jewish federation campaigns on behalf of Israel, primarily for use by the Jewish Agency for Israel. The organization also secures and monitors U.S. grant funds for the immigration and absorption of Jewish refugees and humanitarian migrants to Israel from countries of distress. United Israel Appeal partners with the Jewish Agency for Israel to assist American Jews in contributing to the development of the State of Israel, and maintains offices in New York City and Jerusalem.
Globally, the organization continues its mission as a central pillar of global Jewish philanthropy with a focus on fostering unity between the Jewish people and Israel, maintaining a worldwide presence while being headquartered in Jerusalem, and emphasizing long-term investments in education, social services, and community building to address contemporary challenges faced by Israel and the Diaspora.
